MASTER DEGREE IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING AND EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING, certified by the Catalan Agency for University Quality and verified by the Spanish National Association for Evaluation, Quality and Certification (ANECA).

Background:

The Ph.D. Program in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics saw the light in 1984, as an evolution of the Postgraduate Program that, with the same name, introduced the UPC into advanced studies related to earthquakes, their effect on structures and the way to palliate them.
In 1986, under the new doctorate law, the program was approved by the Doctorate Commission of the UPC. Since then, the program has adapted to different Ph.D. regulations, specifically to the Royal Decrees number 778/1998, 55/1998, 56/2005, 189/2007, 1393/2007 and 99/2011.
The program has throughout these years been a driving force for the research work and technology transfer in the fields of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. It also offers top-level formation to a great number of students, mostly from South America. Some of these students currently occupy high profile positions within the academic, technological, research or government fields of their respective countries.

Justification of the need for the program:

 

Aim:

Once the students complete the Ph.D. program (both the learning and research periods), they will be able:

  • To demonstrate a systematic comprehension of the field of study (in seismology, earthquake engineering and structural dynamics), and their mastering of the research abilities and methods with regards to that field.
  • To demonstrate their capabilities to conceive, design, develop and adopt a fundamental research process with academic seriousness.
  • To contribute with an original research that widens the knowledge by means of a considerable corpus and deserves its publication at a national or international level.
  • To critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize new and complex ideas.
  • To communicate with their colleagues and the academic community, in particular, and with the society, in general, about their field of knowledge.
  • To encourage, at an academic and professional level, the technological, social or cultural advances within a society that is based on knowledge.

The acquisition of these capabilities during the learning period is evaluated by passing the different subjects of the Ph.D. program. During the research period these capabilities will be evaluated by means of public lectures in seminars or congresses within the area of expertise of the Ph.D. student.

Specific requirements

Engineers and university graduates, preferably from Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering or Architecture studies. More than a postgraduate course in Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences or other related fields. Other curricula or learning profiles will be evaluated by the program's Committee.


Additional training
Based on the degree and knowledge required to gain access to the program, as well as to the aim of the thesis, the Academic Committee could demand for students to attend specific additional training, which can either involve research or transversal training, but which will never be equal or surpass 60 ECTS credits.

Pre-enrollment

Given that admittance is limited, it is necessary to pre-enroll in the program. This can be done on-line by filling up a form with all the personal details. The applicants having pre-enrolled will receive information on whether they have been accepted before the end of July.

Student welcome:

The head of the program will interview the doctorates and, depending on their interests, will assign them a director adequate to the subject of study. The director establishes a registration schedule for each student, individually, as well as the specialty depending on their background and interests, and a follow up not only of the learning period but also of the research phase. The staff from the secretariat of the department will welcome the new doctorates, help them with the registration and give them all the information on the services and resources available at the university and the department for the development of their Ph.D. studies. UPC organises at the beginning of each academic year the Orientation Week for new foreign students. The Orientation Week offers activities to familiarise students with UPC and Catalonian society.

Credit recognition policy:

The academic committee of the Ph.D. program determines the potential credit recognition from the student's original degree, taking into account the rules established by the university in this respect.

Complementary training of activities specifically designed for UPC's M.Sc. programs:

Besides the professors that habitually collaborate with the program, several professor from internationally well-known universities visit our department every year to give intensive seminars on topics of public interest within the Ph.D. program. Courses financed by the mobility fund of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

Complementary training of additional activities during the research phase:

Seminars and activities to introduce students into bibliographical research taught by the staff from the university library.
Public lectures in seminars and congresses from the area of expertise of the Ph.D. program.
