Paymacotas Workshop on Tunnel Engineering

The Paymacotas Workshop on Tunnel Engineering, which saw the light in January 2nd 2007, is addressed to the fields of formation, research and diffusion of scientific results in Tunnel Engineering.
Objectives
  • To diffuse and popularize the activities the University carries out in the field of tunnels
  • To encourage innovation
  • To bring together University and Industry

Activities
The activities of this program focus specially on:

  • The creation of an annual prize to the best PhD Thesis on tunnel engineering in Spain and another annual prize to the best Dissertation on tunnel Engineering.
  • Organization of research activities within the PhD Program in Civil Engineering and awarding of grants and scholarships to carry out PhD thesis and dissertations regarding tunnel engineering.
  • Organization of activities to diffuse the research work: submission of articles to the International Tunnel Association Conference, to the European Conference of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and to specialized journals.
  • Organization of seminars and technical conferences.
  • Promotion of training periods for students at PAYMACotas Co. and organization of field trips.

 

 

TUNNELS IN MEXICO

banner_eng.jpg This Technical Session revolves around a country: Mexico. During the last years, and thanks to the strong thrust provided by new infrastructure investment programs, tunnelling in Mexico has significantly developed. The aim of the technical session here presented consists in tracing an outlook of this activity. It also covers works of different nature and in many geological environments, thus providing an idea of the diverse and sometimes extreme geotechnics of Mexico.

FIRE IN TUNNELS

web eng.jpg Fires in tunnels are rare events, but with potentially serious consequences. Tunnel engineering has long since become aware of this fact and has developed tools for analysis, design criteria and response techniques that result in an appropriate degree of safety. It is true, however, that the theoretical and practical problems posed by modeling fires in tunnels are important, and it is worth considering what are the possibilities and limitations of the tools now available.

TUNNELLING THROUGH SALINE AND SWELLING GROUND

banner_cst.jpg Works in saline rocks, gypsum and anhydrite encounter materials whose chemical evolution takes place at intermediate times between the construction and lifespan of the works. Tunnelling modifies the physical and chemical equilibrium of the materials excavated. Adjusting to these new conditions can result in significant changes in the geometry (expansion) and mechanical properties (fall in strength and increase in permeability, among others) of the rock, which can eventually lead to collapse.

banner_cst.jpg Desde hace ya tiempo la auscultación sistemática de túneles y excavaciones se considera imprescindible en la ejecución de estas obras. En el caso de la obra urbana, en particular, una auscultación eficaz es esencial para garantizar que la obra discurra sin perjudicar a las estructuras preexistentes. La jornada que se plantea tiene como propósito ofrecer un breve panorama de las técnicas de auscultación de uso corriente en túneles y excavaciones. También, y puesto que el desarrollo de tales técnicas es constante, se hace un esfuerzo por presentar algunas de las novedades más interesantes en este tema.

TUNNELS IN GRANITE

banner eng.jpg Granites are one of the most abundant rocks in the surface of the Earth, in general, and in Spain, in particular. For example, they are present in the Spanish central mountain range (Guadarrama, Gredos...), Galicia and Barcelona, three areas in which the construction of tunnels and excavations is very intense. Granitic rocks have specific characteristics that complicate the construction of tunnels and excavations. The design of tunnels and excavations faces serious problems when evaluating the mechanical or hydrological behaviour of granite alteration areas.

ROCK MECHANICS APPLIED TO TUNNELS: TRIBUTE TO PROF. ALCIBÍADES SERRANO

logo cat.gif The beginning and development of rock mechanics is closely related to tunnel engineering, as it is in this discipline that rock mechanics is mostly applied.
The work of Professor Alcibíades Serrano has become esssential for the development of rock mechanics in Spain. Currently, he is professor emeritus in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Geotecnia of the CEDEX, has received the 2007 Spanish National Award in Civil Engineering, and his experience ranges from the most theoretical developments to their application in many civil works.

PRESSIOMETRIC TEST IN GEOTECHNICAL PROJECTS

presiom cst.jpg Pressiometric tests are among the most versatile and powerful ground recognisition tools for geotecnitians. By means of well-executed and well-interpreted pressiometric tests, shallow and deep foundations can be directly measured, as well as the parameters necessary to carry out analytical calculations (i.e. bearing) and numerical tests (i.e. movements induced by excavations and other works). The execution of the tests is quite easy and allows obtaining results in a period of time that is compatible with the needs of the works.

Movimientos de edificios inducidos por excavaciones Underground works -tunnels and excavations- are essential to integrate transportation infrastructures to the urban area. One of the main design criteria is to minimize the risk to a third party that implies its execution. In order to assess this risk, the behavior of nearby buildings, with regards to ground movements induced by excavations, should be estimated in each case.

Túnels amb EPB: Simulació i Control de la Tuneladora EPB tunnel boring machines have become one of the tools most used for tunnel excavations in urban areas. This is due to their many advantages regarding security, minimum effect on the environment, versatility and high performance. In Spain, EPBs are accountable for the most recent and important public works, such as the M30, Line 9 of the Barcelona Subway Network, ADIF tunnels in Madrid and Barcelona, etc.

SEVILLE'S SUBWAY NETWORK

El metro de Sevilla With more than 57 km and 66 stations throughout four lines, Seville's subway is one of the major civil engineering works on course in Europe. The city of Seville presents special building difficulties, due to the density and dimensions of the historical centre and to its high water table. Lecturers invited to this technical conference have an extended knowledge of the works, problems arisen and the way they were solved.

TUNNELS IN CITIES

Túnels en Ciutats Conference on the construction of tunnels in cities that compares the experiences of Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid. The main lecturer was an international expert on the excavation of tunnels in rock. This technical conference was addressed to degree students in Civil Engineering and professionals whose main tasks are the planning, design, management and execution of underground works in urban areas.
