Antonio Gens, professor of our department, and Beatriz Valleján, student of the PhD in Geotechnical Engineering and Geo-Sciences, received the George Stephenson Gold Medal by the British Institution of Civil Engineersblank_page (ICE). The George Stephenson Medal was instituted in 1881 and is awarded annually to the most outstanding written contribution in Civil Engineering. This year 2012 it has been awarded to the paper entitled:

“Hydromechanical behaviour of a heterogeneous compacted soil: experimental observations and modelling”

written by A. Gens. B. Valleján, M. Sánchez, C. Imbert, M.V. Villar & M. Van Geet and published in Géotechniqueblank_page.
The medal was presented by the President of the ICE, Richard Coackley, in a ceremony that took place in London last October 12th. The award states: “The paper is an outstanding study of using bentonite powder and pellets as sealing material in nuclear waste disposal facilities, giving an improved understanding of the problems related to the coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour of nuclear waste repositories.”
